A grand antique Edwardian Albert chain modelled in solid sterling silver and gilded in a bright 18ct yellow gold. The curb links graduate in size toward the centre and each is stamped with a sterling lion mark. It’s fitted with the traditional double claw clasps and a T-bar, with an additional length of chain at the end that would usually hold a pendant or medallion.
Albert chains were named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the first World War who wore the chains as a keepsake in the hope they’d return home safely.
The chain is substantial with a good weight and bears Birmingham hallmarks dating to 1901 and the maker’s mark belonging to “Henry Pope”. It’s in excellent condition and all original, except one clasp which looks to have been replaced over time.
