An exquisite antique Edwardian cameo brooch from the early 20th Century set with a wonderful, high relief cameo hand carved from a bull-mouth shell. It depicts the side profile of the god of wine and fertility Bacchus who is seen here with flowers in his hair.
Roman style Cameo’s became popular in Britain in the 19th century during the 'Grand Tour' days when tourists developed a fascination with destinations such as Rome. They often depicted Goddesses and characters from mythology and became a favourite of Queen Victoria also.
It’s a clever design and the cameo can be rotated to reveal a locket on the reverse complete with an original photograph of a finely dressed gentleman preserved behind a glass window. It’s held in a fabulous, 9ct gold frame depicting intertwined vines and fitted with a pin and locking clasp on the back.
It’s a wonderful piece of history and is even complete with its original box with blue velvet interior to store it in.
