This grand antique Edwardian Albert chain is made up of chunky curb links crafted from solid sterling silver, each proudly bearing the British lion passant hallmark. The chain has been richly overlaid with sunny 18ct yellow gold gilt and retains its original dog clips, bearing the faded initials “B&B” (possibly Booth & Bigs), with a T-bar suspended from a long drop chain at the end. The extra chain looks to have been taken from the original or is perhaps a matching replacement along with the bar, which bears different initials and Birmingham hallmarks, dating to 1908.
Albert chains were both a stylish and practical accessory for gentlemen in the early 20th century, typically used to secure a pocket watch or fob to a waistcoat buttonhole for quick access. They later gained sentimental value during WWI, when soldiers’ wives wore them as keepsakes, creating a fashionable trend that has continued to this day.
In excellent condition, this Edwardian Albert chain is a superb collector’s piece, rich with history and character. It measures 17 inches and can be worn in the traditional manner as a gentleman’s watch chain or styled as a bold statement necklace.
