This rare antique Victorian family locket is an extraordinary example of mid-19th century sentimentality, designed to be worn as a brooch. Dating to circa 1860, this remarkable piece centres on two oval lockets that rotate to reveal four separate glass compartments. They currently hold printed artworks of St. George and the Dragon alongside a finely dressed boy’s portrait. These were likely chosen by a previous owner for their symbolic meaning (St. George for protection). Behind them, the lockets would have held hidden locks of a child’s hair, a deeply personal keepsake that could be carried close to the heart.
The warm, golden pinchbeck frame continues this language of sentiment and symbolism. It is crowned with three vivid cherry-pink almandine garnets across the centre, representing beating hearts, while surrounding naturalistic motifs tell their own story: coiled ivy leaves for fidelity, acorns for longevity, and delicate forget-me-not engravings that whisper of enduring devotion.![]()
