This substantial antique Victorian Mizpah cross pendant was crafted in Birmingham in 1882 by renowned silversmiths Payton & Wilson and is fully hallmarked on the reverse. The piece is fashioned from sterling silver, featuring the word "MIZPAH" in raised rose gold letters across the centre bar, with intricately hand-engraved leaf and flower motifs climbing the face of the cross.
"Mizpah" references the biblical prayer: "The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another." In the late 19th century, when travel was perilous and communication slow, pieces like this were exchanged between sweethearts, soldiers, and families as a talisman of protection and a vow to return. The climbing plant motif reinforces this touching message, symbolising fidelity and undying affection.
