This wonderful antique snake brooch is crafted in 18ct yellow gold and displays a rather cheerful expression, with vivid red garnet eyes and a row of graduating turquoise adorning the head. The piece looks to be an early 19th Century conversion with its short length suggesting it was perhaps originally part of a necklace, with the head and tail originally serving as a clasp. It has since been joined and fitted with a silver pin, transforming it into the charming brooch we see today.
Intricate scale and scroll engraving flow across the top, while the reverse bears the touching inscription “B.T. to J.B.” - a quiet echo of a long-forgotten love story. Serpent jewellery held deep romantic symbolism during the early 19th Century, representing eternal love and devotion. Turquoise, was also cherished as a token of enduring affection, often associated with the forget-me-not flower and given as a token of good fortune.
A highly collectable piece of history, lovingly adapted and preserved through the centuries, this brooch carries both beauty and sentiment in equal measure. Gift it to someone special and let its timeless message of love continue into the next century.
