This enormous Celtic penannular brooch is crafted from solid sterling silver and decorated with gold accents, seven deep red cabochon garnets and two blue lapis lazuli with speckled gold flecks. It’s fitted with a double crossover pin at the back for secure wear, as well as an additional loop, allowing it to be worn as a substantial pendant if desired.

In the 20th century, there was a strong Celtic revival across the UK, inspiring jewellers to create traditional Celtic-inspired pieces for collectors. A Penannular was a type of fastener which was traditionally worn on the shoulder by Scottish and Irish elites during the medieval period as a symbol of strength and status.

This bold and heavy Celtic penannular brooch is a magnificent statement piece for collectors and was assayed in Sheffield in 1990, with clear hallmarks on the reverse.
