A grand antique Edwardian Albert chain, made up of solid silver curb links, each stamped with a sterling Lion mark and gilded in a sunny 18ct yellow gold. It’s complete with its original claw clasps and T-bar and has been bestowed with a large crest medallion suspended from the bottom, which is finely engraved, with the Cheshire coat of arms in the centre, depicting three wheatsheaves on a royal blue enamel shield. It appears to have been presented at a sports event as an inscription on the back reads; “Mid.Ches.BA – V.P.B.C – Runners up – W. Harrison – Season 1907”.
Albert chains were both a fashionable and practical accessory for a gentleman in the 20th Century, often adorned with a pocket watch or fob and secured to the buttonhole of a waistcoat for quick access. Today they’re also worn as versatile and stylish necklaces; a custom started by the wives of soldiers during WW1 who wore the chains as a keepsake.
This substantial Edwardian Albert chain was clearly a cherished heirloom and has a good weight and bright yellow bloom. It’s highly collectable and complete with hallmarks and the maker’s mark, confirming it was made in Birmingham by E. Whitehouse & Son in 1903, with the medallion added later in 1907.
