This exquisite antique Georgian mourning locket has been beautifully preserved from the late 18th Century. It features a large glass window in the centre with a beautiful display of plaited brown hair behind that likely belonged to a loved one from long ago.

Though it may seem morbid today, Mourning jewellery was extremely popular in the 18th and 19th Century. The pieces, often lockets or rings, were made as loving tributes to those who had passed, a symbol of undying love and remembrance, that sometimes contained a lock of the deceased hair so that a piece of them remained forever close to the wearer’s heart.

The locket is fashioned in sterling silver and encircled by chunky, foil-backed paste stones that glitter around the border and along a fabulous bow topper above. There is also a door at the back that gives access to the interior, so you can add your own photograph or lock of hair to the piece if you wish.

This is a remarkable antique Georgian find that was clearly very dear to its original owner. It hangs from a long, silver cable chain that has accompanied the piece across the centuries.
