This large antique Georgian mourning cross pendant dates to the early 19th Century. It’s been carved from a slab of black polished onyx and fitted with an 18ct gold bale and tips, edged with golden balls. The crowning feature is a gold cross in the centre, lined with bright natural seed pearls which contrast beautifully against the jet-black onyx base.
Though it may seem morbid today, Mourning jewellery was extremely popular in the 18th and 19th Century. The pieces were made as loving tributes to those who had passed, a symbol of undying love and remembrance that would stand the test of time. Dark materials, such as onyx, were often used, along with seed pearls, which represented fallen tears.
This is a rare and collectable antique Georgian cross, that has been beautifully preserved across the centuries and surely has a rich and fascinating story behind it.
