This grand antique Victorian Albert chain is made up of solid sterling silver curb links, each verified with a sterling lion stamp and cased in a bright 18ct yellow gold. It’s fitted with the traditional T-bar, claw clasps and an extension of chain at the end, holding a cherished shield medallion, engraved with the previous wearer’s initials “M.C.G”. All the components bear Birmingham hallmarks, dating between 1891 – 1897, with one clasp added to the end dating to 1906.

Albert chains were traditionally a practical accessory, worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. They have since evolved into versatile and stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the First World War who wore the chains as a keepsake in the hope they’d return home safely.

This luxurious Victorian Albert chain is perfect for layering with other gold chains or worn alone as a statement piece or watch chain. The style is as popular and sought after today as it was in the 19th Century, and this is a wonderful example, with an ample length, pleasing weight and bright yellow bloom.
