Made in Birmingham in 1880, this classic antique Victorian Albert chain is made up of sterling silver trombone links, cased in a sunny 18ct yellow gold. It’s complete with its original T-bar and clasp, bearing Birmingham hallmarks and the maker’s mark (P.P.Co) and is fitted with an extension of chain and two fabulous antique fobs, dating to 1888 and 1894.
The largest fob exhibits a rotating, three-sided smoky quartz held between engraved golden arches with depictions of three-leaf shamrocks on top. The other fob is also ornately engraved and features a tangled love knot motif on top with a bloodstone seal underneath, spattered with red droplets.
Fob pendants were a fashionable accessory in the 19th Century, often worn on an Albert chain alongside a pocket watch. The seal, which was sometimes engraved with an identifiable image or monogram could also be used to stamp sealing wax on important letters or documents, making them functional as well as stylish.
This luxurious Victorian Albert chain is perfect for layering with other gold chains or worn alone as a statement piece or watch chain. The style is as popular and sought after today as it was in the 19th Century, and this is a wonderful example, with a bright yellow bloom and two additional fob charms.
