Dating to the mid 19th Century, this exquisite antique Austro-Hungarian locket is a truly rare and special find. A large, polished onyx forms the base of the piece and conceals a large locket at the back, whilst the front is decorated with a colourful starburst of gems on top, made up of deep-pink marquise and cabochon garnets, green and blue cabochon turquoise and bright natural seed pearls, adding a striking pop of colour that stands out beautifully against the jet-black backdrop.

The Austro-Hungarian Empire, which ruled from 1867 to 1918, was among the largest Western empires in the world. Their jewellery was celebrated for its elaborate and opulent designs, drawing inspiration from 16th-century Renaissance artistry. These creations often incorporated vibrant gemstones set into intricately detailed bases, resulting in distinctive statement pieces that stood apart from other jewellery of the era.

This rare and highly collectable Austro-Hungarian locket is exquisitely crafted and in excellent condition, with a beautiful assortment of coloured gems on top. It’s suspended from an ornate silver bale, gilded in yellow gold and dotted with additional gemstones and the locket is fitted with a gold rim and window at the back which is large enough to insert a cherished photograph or lock of hair so that it hangs forever close to your heart.
