An exquisite antique Victorian cameo brooch from the mid 19th Century featuring a wonderful high relief cameo, hand carved from a bullmouth shell. It depicts the side profile of a roman lady with a decorative headpiece and is extremely detailed and well-executed.
Roman style Cameo’s were highly sought after in the 19th century during the 'Grand Tour' days when tourists developed a fascination with destinations such as Rome. They often depicted Goddesses and characters from mythology and became a favourite of Queen Victoria also.
The frame is fashioned in 15ct gold and is complete with a pin and safety chain for added security when worn. It’s remained in excellent condition and is a great collector’s piece.
