Adorned with a charming rainbow of natural gems, this fabulous antique Victorian harlequin necklace is sure to delight. Five droppers and two festoon chains dangle from the bottom of the piece, decorated with thirteen multi-coloured gemstones, including tourmaline, quartz, spinel and sapphire. The stones are a contrast of green, pink, blue and white and range from approx. 0.30ct, to a large 3ct green tourmaline at the bottom of the central dropper.
Harlequin jewellery, as the name suggests, draws its inspiration from the colourful patchwork costumes of the 16th Century “Commedia dell'arte” characters. The style became popular during the 19th Century and saw wonderful pieces of jewellery abundantly decorated in multi-coloured gemstones, making them both elegant and playful.
The gemstones are set in 9ct gold frames and hang from a fine trombone link chain, that has been extended with a length of cable chain at the top, but joins its original tube clasp at the end.
This gorgeous Victorian harlequin necklace is a true collector’s piece and would add a beautiful splash of colour and elegance to any outfit. It dates to the late 19th Century and has remained in excellent condition.
