Dating to the late 19th Century, this long antique French guard chain consists of fancy, open-work links, with milgrain detailing and a large spring ring clasp at the end. It’s crafted skilfully in silver and has been given a lustrous 18ct yellow gold gilt finish.
Both fashionable and practical, Guard chains were a must have accessory in the 18th & 19th Century. They were deliberately long enough to be tucked into a belt and the clasp could be fitted with a pocket watch, lorgnette glasses, or a cylinder of fur known as a muff for quick access when needed. They’re also perfect for layering and can be personalised with lockets, pendants, or charms as well.
With an ample length of 56 inches, this stylish antique French guard chain can be worn as one long chain or looped twice around the neck to make two festoons of gold. It’s in excellent condition and would be perfect worn alone or layered with other gold chains from your collection for more impact.
