A beautifully preserved antique Victorian mourning brooch from the mid 19th Century. The piece features a display of plaited blonde hair behind a glass window and is set in in an ornate 9ct gold frame with exquisite, scrolling patterning, highlighted in white enamel.

Mourning jewellery was worn in remembrance of a deceased loved one and sometimes contained a lock of their hair so that a piece of them was always kept close to the wearer.  White enamel was often used to represent purity and innocence and suggests it was made in remembrance of a beloved child.

It was clearly very dear to its original owner and deserves to be treasured once more.
