This charming antique Victorian novelty brooch depicts a blue-winged Kookaburra perched on a tree branch. He’s modelled in 9ct yellow gold and encrusted with creamy seed pearls and sky-blue turquoise across the front, mimicking their natural white and blue feathers, with a pink garnet eye at the head.
The iconic Blue-winged Kookaburra is a type of kingfisher, native to northern Australia's tropical woodlands and southern New Guinea. It’s distinguished from other species by its vibrant blue and white plumage but like other Kookaburras, is known for its loud cackling squawks that can resemble human laughter.
This collectable Victorian kookaburra novelty pin was made in Melbourne by "Aronson & Co" in the late 19th Century and bears Australian hallmarks and the maker's mark at the back. It would look fabulous perched on a lapel, bag, or scarf and is fitted with a long safety chain for extra peace of mind when worn.
