An exquisite antique Victorian “Love & War” locket featuring a detailed high relief cameo expertly hand carved from a dark brown agate. It depicts the profiles of Mars (God of war) and Venus (Goddess of Love) who were often depicted in mythology as both lovers and enemies, highlighting the inherent differences between the genders which are often in conflict, yet united through the irresistible attraction and passion they both share for one another.
Roman style Cameo’s were highly sought after in the 19th century during the 'Grand Tour' days when tourists developed a fascination with destinations such as Rome. They often depicted Goddesses and characters from mythology and became a favourite of Queen Victoria also.
The cameo is set upon a solid 15ct gold rotating locket with the original owner’s initials still visible on the reverse. It opens vertically to reveal original rims and windows, ready to house beloved photos or a lock of hair.
It’s been beautifully preserved over the centuries and is a rare antique find that deserves to be treasured once more.
