A grand antique Edwardian Albert chain, made up of solid sterling silver curb links, each stamped with a sterling lion mark and gilded in a bright 18ct yellow gold. The curb chain is complete with new clasps and its original T-bar, bearing Birmingham hallmarks dating to 1915 and the maker’s mark “G.L.G”.
A large shield medallion is also suspended from the end of the chain and is hallmarked Birmingham, 1911. The crest is highlighted in a red and blue enamel and features “Sedgley & District Cricket League 1911” written across the top and the initials W.D. on the reverse.
Albert chains were popularised and named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort in the 19th Century and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the First World War who wore the chains as a keepsake.
This is a wonderful, solid Edwardian Albert chain, with a good weight and beautiful yellow gold bloom. It would look perfect worn as a traditional Albert or as a statement necklace.
