This exquisite antique Victorian cameo brooch dates from the mid-19th century and is set in a finely crafted pinchbeck frame with ornate rope-edge detailing. The high-relief bullmouth shell cameo is hand-carved to depict a classical Roman-style scene with two figures: a larger woman carrying a basket laden with fruit and sheaves of wheat on her head, accompanied by a smaller child.
In the 19th Century, Roman-style Cameos became fashionable in Victorian society, especially during the “Grand Tour” days, when wealthy Europeans collected classical art and antiquities during travels to Italy and Greece. The imagery in this cameo of a woman with fruit and wheat evokes Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest, symbolising fertility, prosperity, and the nurturing of life.
This grand Victorian cameo brooch is a beautiful work of art and perfect for collectors, or anyone seeking an individual antique statement piece. It’s in excellent condition and fitted with its original pin and a long safety chain for extra peace of mind when worn.
