A fabulous antique French guard chain from the early 20th Century consisting of fancy, open-work links with two loops in the centre forming an eternity symbol. They’re fashioned in silver and gilded in a bright yellow gold with a ring clasp hung at the end.
Guard chains were at the height of popularity in the 18th & 19th Century. Both fashionable and practical, they were deliberately long enough to be tucked into a belt and the clasp was usually adorned with a pocket watch, lorgnette or muff.
It has a good weight and length, measuring 56 inches so it can be worn as one long chain or looped twice around the neck to make two festoons of gold.
