An exquisite antique mid-Victorian cameo brooch (Circa 1860) decorated with seven high relief cameos fashioned from grey hardstone, brown lavastone and orange coral. They’re beautifully detailed and have been hand carved to depict characters and Gods from Roman mythology and set in a wonderful, open-work 18ct gold frame.
In the early 19th century during the “Grand Tour” days of the English aristocracy, tourists developed a fascination with the newly discovered ruins of Pompeii and brought home Lava stone as a souvenir to be made into fashionable cameo pieces which were at the height of popularity and a favourite of Queen Victoria also.
It’s been beautifully preserved over the centuries and is a highly collectable antique find.
