A large antique Victorian mourning locket fashioned in 18ct yellow gold back and front with intricate floral images engraved on both sides. The shell has also been textured with fine lines to give it a smooth, matt finish and features a scalloped edge with further foliate engraving around the border.
The locket opens on both sides and is complete with a loving inscription within, dedicated to a beloved mother or wife named Maggie who passed away on October 17th 1859. In addition to this, the locket has two original windows preserving a large lock of her brown hair on one side, and on the reverse a hand-painted portrait of Maggie wearing a traditional bonnet with what looks like daises woven into the brim.
This is a wonderful and highly collectable piece of Victorian history. It was clearly very dear to its original owner and has remained in pristine condition across the centuries.
