An exquisite antique Georgian fob pendant depicting a gargoyle head with open jaws that hold a polished moss agate orb. It displays cloudy pale-blue bands on the right and transitions into transparent green on the left, with natural veins and spotting beneath the surface that resembles moss.
Fobs were a fashionable accessory in the 19th Century and were often worn on a chain alongside a pocket watch to stamp sealing wax on important letters. This one was perhaps used to stamp love letters to a distant sweetheart as it features a wonderful Love Token at the base which were a form of keepsake, made from a smoothed-out coin and engraved with a sentimental image or monogram, in this case, a “W” which was likely the senders initial.
The piece is fashioned in gilt metal and is beautifully detailed with ornate engraving and a wonderful Love token at the bottom that can be unscrewed. It’s a fantastic collector’s piece from the early-1800s and is perhaps part of a much greater love story.
