An exquisite antique mid-Victorian Etruscan revival brooch (Circa 1870) featuring a detailed Micro Mosaic centre piece depicting flowers and two white doves upon a blue backdrop.

Roman style Micro Mosaic's such as this are made up of unusually small pieces of glass (tesserae), or in later Italian pieces an enamel-like material, to make small figurative images which were sought after in the 19th century during the “Grand Tour” days, when tourists developed a fascination with destinations such as Rome.

Doves are symbolic of peace, freedom and everlasting love. Their loving nature and deep devotion to their life partner have earned them the nickname “The Love bird” and make them a popular symbol used to show one’s love and devotion to another.

The navette gallery is all 15ct gold with intricate Etruscan inspired metalwork and scrolling patterns and golden balls around the edges. It’s remained in pristine condition and is a wonderful work of art, fitted with a strong pin and safety chain to hold it securely on a lapel.
