A beautiful antique Scottish agate brooch fashioned in silver in the late Victorian era (Circa 1860). Each Agate is unique and boasts various earthy colours and patterned layers which are naturally formed, earning it the appropriate nickname ‘The Earth Rainbow’.
Scottish jewellery was made popular by Queen Victoria as it became a souvenir of her trips to Scotland. From the mid 1800's Queen Victoria frequented Scotland and her Scottish Castle Balmoral.
The brooch features a memorial inscription on the reverse which reads: “C. E. - Fell asleep in Jesus - April 22nd 1891”. The meaning of the quote has many interpretations, but the popular belief is that it suggests those who followed Jesus and have passed away are only spiritually asleep and will awake again in Heaven.
It was clearly very dear to its original owner and has remained in pristine condition.
