This grand antique Albert chain is made up of chunky sterling silver curb links, each stamped with a sterling Lion mark. The silver chain has been gilded in a bright 18ct yellow gold and is fitted with its original claw clasps, a T-bar and three additional links at the end that would traditionally hold a fob or medallion.

Albert chains are named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the First World War who wore the chains as a keepsake in the hope they’d return home safely.

This is a robust Art Deco era Albert chain, which is all original and has a pleasing weight and bright yellow bloom. It’s complete with the maker’s mark “H.B&S” on the bar, clasps and chain, with Birmingham hallmarks as well on the T-Bar, indicating it was made by “Herbert Bushell & Son Ltd” in 1918.
