A grand antique Edwardian Albert chain, made up of chunky sterling silver curb links, some bearing a Sterling Lion mark. The chain has been gilded in a bright 18ct yellow gold and is fitted with claw clasps, a T-bar and three additional links at the end that would traditionally hold a medallion.
Albert chains are named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the First World War who wore the chains as a keepsake in the hope they’d return home safely.
This is a robust Edwardian Albert chain with a good weight and bright yellow bloom. It’s complete with the maker’s mark “H.P.” on the clasps and Birmingham hallmarks on the T-Bar, dating the piece to 1908.
