A grand antique Edwardian Albert chain made up of sterling silver curb links and fitted with the classic double claw clasp, T-bar and a large medallion decorated with floral engraving and topped with a rosy gold gilt shield in the centre.

Albert chains were popularised and named after Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort in the 19th Century and were traditionally worn by gentlemen to secure a pocket watch to the buttonhole of a waistcoat. Today, they are also worn as stylish necklaces; a custom that was started by the wives of soldiers during the first world war who wore the chains as a keepsake in the hope they’d return home safely.

All the parts were made in Birmingham and bear hallmarks and sterling lion marks. The chain is dated 1905 and has been fitted with a newer medallion marked 1909. It’s a solid, substantial chain and can be worn as a traditional Albert or as a stylish necklace.
