A grand antique Edwardian guard chain from the early 1900s consisting of graduated curb and twisted figaro links, all fashioned in solid silver, gilded in sunny 18ct yellow gold, with a sterling lion passant stamped upon each link. The chain has been repurposed over time from a traditional Albert chain (possibly 2) into a stylish guard chain with an ample length of 31 inches. The original claw clasp now hangs from the bottom and holds a large, ornate medallion, featuring a crown on top and scrolling, foliate engraving surrounding a crest in the centre.

Albert chains were both a fashionable and practical accessory for a gentleman in the 20th Century, often adorned with a pocket watch or fob and secured to the buttonhole of a waistcoat for quick access. Today they’re also worn as versatile and stylish necklaces; a custom started by the wives of soldiers during WW1 who wore the chains as a keepsake.

The medallion looks to have been presented as an award as it features an inscription on the back that reads “Presented to – Bro – F. Howard – P.D.P – By the D.M.U.O.O.O.F”. It’s also complete with Birmingham hallmarks, dating to 1912. This Edwardian guard chain is highly collectable and was likely a cherished, family heirloom that has been kept in pristine condition across the centuries.
