A wonderful antique Georgian snake brooch featuring red garnet eyes and a row of graduating turquoise across the head. It’s fashioned in 18ct gold and displays detailed scale and scroll engraving across the top with the initials “B.T. to J.B.” on the reverse, suggesting it was given as a gift to a loved one.
Serpent jewellery was a popular romantic token during the Georgian era and symbolised a wonderful combination of love, loyalty, and friendship. Turquoise was similarly gifted as a token of friendship and was believed to bring happiness and good fortune to those who received it.
The piece looks to have been converted and was originally part of a Georgian necklace with the head and tail forming the clasp. It’s since been fused together and fitted with a new silver pin and catch to create this beautiful brooch we have here today.
