An exquisite antique Victorian cameo brooch from the mid 19th Century featuring a hand carved bullmouth shell cameo depicting Bacchus, God of wine and festivity with vine leaves woven into his hair. It’s set in a rotating gold case with a fabulous spiralling frame wrapping around the outside etched with fine engraving.

Roman style Cameo jewellery was highly sought after in the 19th Century during the “Grand Tour” days when tourists developed a fascination with destinations such as Rome. They were a personal favourite of Queen Victoria also and were carved in the same classic style, usually depicting Gods and characters from Roman & Greek mythology.

The piece is cased in yellow gold and fitted with a safety chain for extra security when worn. It’s highly collectable and showcases a splendid cameo carved by a true master of the art.
