An intriguing antique brooch featuring an 18ct gold scimitar with a hand overlaid on top. The hand is carved skilfully from burnt-orange coral and held in an ornate, rolled gold cuff which is beautifully detailed along with the hilt of the sword.
Hands carved from coral have been worn in Italy for centuries as a protective amulet, believed to ward off evil spirits. The Scimitar has a more Middle Eastern design but may have been used to further emphasise the theme of protection.
It’s a curious and collectable brooch and has remained in excellent condition since the late 19th Century.
