An exquisite antique Victorian mourning heart locket (Circa 1860) fashioned from a jet-black onyx that is polished and smooth to the touch and topped with an 18ct gold loop and leaf, dotted with small seed pearls.
The back is fitted with a small, hidden locket with a beautiful hand painted colour portrait preserved behind a round glass window. It depicts an elderly lady in traditional Victorian attire, likely a much-loved wife or mother who the piece was commissioned for after her death.
After the death of her husband Prince Albert in the mid-19th Century, Queen Victoria went into a period of mourning that lasted decades and during this time wore predominantly black clothing and mourning jewellery which became a trend across Britain. The pieces may seem morbid today, but they were made as loving tributes to those who had passed, a symbol of undying love and remembrance that would stand the test of time.
It’s a highly collectable piece that has been well preserved and loved across the centuries and deserves to be treasured once more.
