Dating to the High Victorian era, circa 1880, this grand antique oval locket is exquisitely crafted in 15ct yellow gold back and front. Its luminous face features a stylised heart set with lustrous natural seed pearls, pierced by a hand-engraved Cupid’s arrow and framed by delicate foliate sprigs within an ornate chased border.
Opening on a sturdy hinge, it reveals two original compartments with decorative retaining rims and two original Victorian portraits preserved behind glass. To one side sits a distinguished gentleman with mutton-chop whiskers, book in hand; opposite, an elegant woman gazes outward with captivating poise. Were they parted lovers keeping each other close across distant journeys, or newlyweds sealing an eternal vow? The pearl-set heart pierced by Cupid’s arrow suggests eloquently of ardent devotion and enduring love between the two.
In exceptional condition, with crisp engraving, a smooth polished shell and a satisfying snap closure, this rare 15ct gold locket is a deeply romantic, collectable antique treasure. Wear it on a gold chain and let its timeless love story live on.
