This rare antique Victorian harlequin scorpion brooch is a dazzling relic of the late 19th-century naturalist craze. Crafted in muted 15ct yellow gold, the scorpion comes alive with a vibrant rainbow of graduated gemstones down its back, including garnet, tourmaline, zircon, topaz, amethyst and some coloured pastes, leading to a curled stinger at the end.

The design is a classic example of "Harlequin" jewellery, a style beloved in the 19th century for its joyful, multi-coloured gem settings, but the choice of motif adds a deeper layer of intrigue. In the Victorian era, wearing a predatory creature was often an apotropaic talisman meant to ward off bad luck, while simultaneously nodding to the alluring "Femme Fatale." It suggests a wearer of sharp wit and formidable nature.

Preserved in excellent condition with a secure pin and safety catch, this is the ultimate treasure for a Scorpio or a collector of fine curiosities. Pin it high on a blazer lapel or silk scarf and let this exquisite protector creep elegantly over your shoulder, captivating all with its kaleidoscope of gemstones.
