An exquisite antique Victorian vinaigrette locket from the mid 19th Century inlaid with polished Montrose agate segments on the front which have a distinct silvery-blue tone and natural bands that are unique to the east coast of Scotland.
It opens to reveal a generous compartment within that would have traditionally contained a small sponge soaked in a scented perfume or aromatic herbs such as sage and lavender to create a pleasant aroma that followed you throughout the day. They were usually held behind a hinged grille, but this looks to have been removed over time and can be used to store photographs or other mementos.
It's fashioned in sterling silver and decorated with detailed engraving throughout, with scrolling foliate motifs on the back and Birmingham hallmarks within, dating the piece to 1858.
It’s a rare antique find, in excellent condition and complete with a new sterling silver cable chain to display it on.
